What is the difference between FSSAI registration and licence?
FSSAI basic registration is for petty food businesses with turnover up to ₹12 lakh (manufacturers up to ₹20 lakh). State licence covers turnover ₹12 lakh–₹20 crore within one state. Central licence is mandatory for turnover above ₹20 crore, multi-state operations, or specific categories like dairy, meat, and import-export.
Is FSSAI registration mandatory for small home businesses?
Yes. Every food business operator (FBO) — including home bakers, tiffin services, cloud kitchens, and small caterers — must register on the FoSCoS portal before commencing operations. Operating without valid registration attracts imprisonment up to 6 months and ₹5 lakh fine under Section 63 of the FSS Act, 2006.
How long does FSSAI registration take?
Basic registration is typically issued within 7–30 days if documents are in order. State licence takes 30–60 days after inspection by the Designated Officer. Central licence takes 60–90 days. Renewals should be filed 30 days before expiry to avoid the ₹100/day late fee.
What documents are needed for FSSAI registration?
Identity proof (Aadhaar/PAN), address proof of business premises (rent agreement + electricity bill or property tax receipt), photographs of the premises, list of food products manufactured or sold, and partnership deed / incorporation certificate if applicable. Manufacturer-specific: layout plan, water test report, and product label samples.
