Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions about fssai registration / licence eligibility.
Is FSSAI registration mandatory?
Yes — every food business operator (FBO) in India must obtain an FSSAI licence or registration before commencing any food business activity. Operating without one is punishable under Section 63 of the FSSAI Act (imprisonment up to 6 months + ₹5L fine).
What is the turnover cap for Basic FSSAI registration?
₹12L annual turnover. The cap was raised from ₹7.5L to ₹12L by FSSAI Notification F. No. 2/15015/30/2011 (as amended in 2018). For turnover above ₹12L, you need a State or Central licence.
What is the difference between State and Central FSSAI licence?
State licence: operations confined to a single State. Central licence: inter-State operations, export, import, or large-scale manufacturing. Fees differ by tier and turnover slab — Central is typically ₹3,750 to ₹7,500/year, State is ₹2,000 to ₹7,500/year depending on the State.
Do home-based food businesses need FSSAI registration?
Yes — even cottage-industry / home-based food businesses must register. The application needs the local Panchayat / Municipal trade-licence copy as proof of premises, plus an FSSAI-certified supervisor (can be the operator themselves for Basic registration).
Do cloud kitchens need a different licence?
Cloud kitchens need a State or Central licence based on turnover and inter-State delivery footprint. The operator must designate an FSSAI-certified Food Safety Supervisor, and the premises (kitchen facility) needs to meet Schedule IV infrastructure norms.
